Generator Rex is one of the newest animated series to the Cartoon Network channel. It follows Rex, your average fifteen year old boy - well, except for the fact that he is infected with Nanites. These Nanites change him into a biological mutant known as an EVO - or Exponentially Variegated Organism for us parents. ;) Being an EVO means he can actually gow machines from his body - how's that for a incredible super power? He can grow a giant fist, turn his arm into a rocket launcher, come up with a super fast motorcycle, or even my favorite - build a flying jetpack! Thanks to Rex's newfound talent, he's now helping to save the world from those evil out of control EVO's - a tall order for a 15 year old. Of course, when he's not out saving us from destruction, he's hacking into computer systems and other ahem, fun stuff. Oh, did we mention he's totally lost all his memories? Rex is on the hunt to find out exactly who he really is, with the help of Agent Six - Rex's "handler". Agent Six is like a Texan man in black (pointy shoes, skinny tie... maybe you need to be Texan to get that one, lol) meets Kung Fu/Ninja master. Another fun character in the series is Bobo Haha - a monkey with a pirate eye patch who's got Rex's back.
Generator Rex: Volume 1 contains nine episodes on a two disc set. Included are: "The Day That Everything Changed", "String Theory", "Beyond the Sea","Lockdown", "The Architect", "Frostbite", "Leader of the Pack", "Breach", and "Dark Passage". There is also a bit of special features included, although nothing to get too excited about - a music video with the theme song done by a band called Orange, and a gallery with some concept art from the cartoon. Maybe on the next volume they will included some interviews with the show's creators?
Generator Rex will definitely cater to the boys, and most importantly, towards the 8 and up crowd. The show is littered with cartoon violence, and of course, packed with some rather scary monsters that could cause a few night terrors for the younger crowd. View at your family's discretion if you have children under the age of five. That being said, from our adult standpoint, some of the monsters are super cool and Dads and geeks will probably be in love with this show. DH constantly said "Oh, that's AWESOME!" "Check that out!" as he was watching the set, so it definitely got his seal of approval. He said to say that "a lot of the monsters are in the vein of the Ghostbusters cartoon of old, but with a decidedly darker twist. Two thumbs up for the monster designers."

In conjunction with the TV series, they have a bunch of toys and action figures available on the market. One of the best is Battle Saw Rex - zombie lovers, you'll get a kick out of the weapon! Each of the action figures come with a unique weapon or accessory, and an EVO for Rex to protect you from. A little messier are is EVO Attack Pack Slam Cannon Rex that comes with a jar of Nanite Goo to fill Rex's cannon and let it ooze! Messy, yes, but fun for kids, and all of these could make a fun addition to any Easter basket. And if your kids love the action figure vehicles, there are some great ones, including the super cool Transforming Rex Ride! By the way, the DVD slip cover itself is a fun metallic embossed one - it would really stand out in a basket.
Generator Rex: Volume 1 is available now. Rated TVPG-V (see above), the two disc set has a total running time of 207 minutes. It has a suggested retail price of $19.98, though Amazon has it available for $15.99 as of this posting. (Netflix users: this set is not currently available for streaming, however you can add it to your DVD queue to be notified of it being available at a later date.)
Please note that I received a copy of the DVD and several of the themed toys in order to share my thoughts on it. All opinions are my own, and not those of any other party involved in the show. Your opinions on viewing material appropriate for your children may differ from mine.
