Many folks either just leave their expired or old medications in their medicine cabinet, or try to flush it down the drain. Both are just as harmful to you! Flushing old medications down the drain sends it through our wastewater plants, which actually aren't equipped to clean out the medications from our drinking water. That means we're drinking remnants of other people's prescriptions! (Eeek!) Simply throwing old medications into the trash doesn't help either, because we can poison our wildlife and pets, and it STILL can end up in our drinking water when rainwater falls on the trash. (I know, you can't win, can you?) Leaving it in your home can lead to accidental poisoning by our kids, and teenagers could easily get ahold of them, which could lead to much worse scenarios.

So what do you do with expired prescription medications and old over-the-counter medications? Many communities now have a medicine take-back program, where you can bring any old prescription or OTC medications in, no questions asked. Most will even take veterinary prescriptions as well! April 30th, 2011 is National Take Back Day, sponsored by the DEA, and you can easily search their website to find a location in your area set up to dispose of the medications for you. Year around though, there are plenty of locations throughout the country, so you can safely get rid of the medications as needed. If you are having a hard time find a location, check with your local police department - they can usually point you in the right direction!
Local folks, Group Health Cooperative over at 1400 Pottery Avenue here in Port Orchard, as well as their 10452 Silverdale Way NW location in Silverdale, will accept your expired/unused medications during open hours, all year around.
