DVD Review: Max & Ruby: Rainy Day Play

My family and I recently received the new dvd, Max & Ruby: Rainy Day Play, to review.

Max & Ruby: Rainy Day Play is a pretty appropriate DVD for us to be watching; after all, it's the time of year where it always seems to be raining here in Washington! This DVD contains four "episodes" with three "stories" each: "Ruby Writes a Story", "Max?s Dominoes", "Grandma?s Attic"; "Bunny Cakes", "Bunny Party", "Bunny Money"; "Ruby?s Safari", "Max?s Mud Bath", "Max?s Lost Lizard"; and "Ruby?s Rainbow", "Home Tweet Home", "Max?s Mudpie".

The stories on this disc has a theme of playing together, and although it's not raining in most of the stories, many still show how you can play happily with your imagination's help. In "Grandma's Attic", Max & Ruby are exploring the vast treasures Grandma's attic holds. Ruby finds clothes for dressing up in (which is a great lead in for making your own dress up box at home!!!), while Max is fascinated with an old chest that no one has opened in years. Max is determined to open it, and finds the key - what treasure is inside? In "Max's Mud Bath", Ruby and Louise set up a beauty shop, and plan to give Max an all natural fruit mask (LOL) - although Max would rather play in the mud!

There are no special features included. As a heads up, many of the "stories" have been included on other Max & Ruby titles that have been previously released - check your collection before ordering unless you are new to the Mac & Ruby scene.

I've mentioned this in the past on the Max & Ruby DVD's: They are the usual Max and Ruby fare, where you can see Max's stubbornness (just like any 3 year old, of course) and Ruby's intelligence/imagination. It's a great DVD for the preschool set (over the age of 4 will probably get bored fast). If you have never read any of the Max & Ruby stories, I really suggest visiting your local library and picking up a few to read alongside watching the DVD. They are fun, short books that make for an easy read with your kids before naptime and bedtime! These books are some of our favorites here. As always, I have to give not only the books, but this series two thumbs up as a Mom. I especially love that I can stop it after just one short story (using the PS3, it picks up again right where we stopped) and keep TV viewing to a minimum.

Max & Ruby: Rainy Day Play will be released tomorrow, Tuesday April 12th, 2011. Full screen format, it's not rated and safe for all ages, with a total running time of 98 minutes long. The suggested retail price is $16.99, but Amazon has it available on pre-order as of this posting for $12.99. (Netlfix users: this title is not currently listed, but be sure to check their site often in order to add it to your queue! Other Max & Ruby titles are available.)

I received a copy of this DVD in order to share my thoughts on it. All opinions are my own.
