DVD Review: The Super Hero Squad Show: Quest For The Infinity Sword! Volume 4

My family and I recently received a copy of The Super Hero Squad Show: Quest For The Infinity Sword! Volume 4 on DVD to review.

The Super Hero Squad Show features characters from the Marvel comics family - Wolverine, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, etc, who all live in Super Hero City. While they have many of the same features of their look in comic books, the characters on this show have definitely been created to appeal more to kids, almost like mini-me versions of themselves. The Cartoon Network series is kind of a good way to introduce your kids to comic books which normally aren't always appropriate for their age range, especially as we are on the horizon of a lot of comic book character movies coming out this Summer. If you are a comic book geek, you'll either find plenty of stupid humor in this series, or kind of cringe at the fact that it's not like your comic books.

The Super Hero Squad Show: Quest For The Infinity Sword! Volume 4 finishes up the last part of season one with six new episodes: "Hexed, Vexed and Perplexed!", "The Ice Melt Cometh!", "Wrath Of The Red Skull!", "Mother Of Doom!" (it's about me! just kidding!), "Last Exit Before Doomsday!" and "The Al Dente Earth!"

Seriously, aren't the titles just the best? ;) As you can probably guess by the titles, we're, or rather the Super Heroes, are still battling mean ol' Dr. Doom and snagging those last few remaining pieces of the Infinity Sword - which for those new to the TSHSS episodes, was shattered during a knock 'em down battle with none other than Iron Man himself. The Super Heroes need to find all the pieces before anyone else, because each piece - or "fractal" as they are known - has a unique power of it's own. There are several well known names that make voice appearances in the series - Mark Hamill does Red Skull and Chthon, while James Marsters (Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Brainiac in Smallville) and George Takei from Star Trek also do character voices.

This show is rated TV-Y7, and while younger viewers can enjoy it, you may want to use your discretion. It has the usual cartoon violence, of course, and some of the humor can be borderline as to whether or not it's appropriate for younger viewers. Kids will laugh at the slapstick humor, but it's more of a matter of do you want them repeating or trying things themselves. (Comic book geek Dads with a warped sense of humor like my DH seem to love this show. I, on the other hand, end up rolling my eyes more often than not. lol)

The Super Hero Squad Show: Quest For The Infinity Sword! Volume 4 does contain one itty bitty bonus feature - an interview with Charlie Adler, who is the voice of Dr. Doom (Doooooom!) himself. You'd think this being the last volume of the season, that maybe, just maybe, there would be a little more in the special features department, but I guess we're out of luck. (Hmph!)

The Super Hero Squad Show: Quest For The Infinity Sword! Volume 4 will be available this Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011, wherever DVD's are sold. The full screen disc is rated TV-Y7 and has a total running time of 138 minutes long. The suggested retail price is $14.93, but Amazon has it available on pre-order for just $10.99 as of this posting. (Netflix users: this title is not currently available, but you can always check the site periodically)

Please note that I received a copy of this DVD in order to share my thoughts on it. All opinions are my own.
